In the sequel no one was begging for (except Vin Diesel’s agent), Vin Diesel stars as Riddick. He has been left for dead on a barren planet lacking humans (but full of animals that all want to eat him for dinner).
After conquering the environment, and realizing that a massive approaching storm will be even more than he can handle, Riddick finds a rescue beacon and signals for help. Of course, he knows the only people that will come looking for him are a bunch of bounty hunters hoping to collect the price on his head, but Riddick might even be surprised at who else shows up.
Will Riddick be able to fight off all of the mercenaries and the creatures on the planet to escape to freedom?
Do you have what it takes to stay from start to finish?
Riddick is the worst movie of the year, and this is the year The Lone Ranger was released.
Written and directed by David Twohy (the man who brought you G.I. Jane and Waterworld), Riddick is a celebration of blood, gore, insufferable machismo and gutter dialogue that makes me wonder if Twohy hangs out with anybody but 14-year old boys who spend more time in detention than the library. It’s amateurish writing full of crassness that falls limp because it’s so forced and phony.
The best part of Riddick is the 10 – 20 minutes at the beginning where we don’t have more than a line or two of dialogue.
Twohy even wants to prove Riddick is so manly, so sexy, so macho he can convert a lesbian character to heterosexuality (and piques her curiosity with the kind of statement one should not find in a mainstream movie). I think you might find better writing in a porno (where one would normally find that line of dialogue).
Riddick becomes nothing more than fight scene followed by fight scene followed by another fight scene all played against a very fake looking computer generated background.
Then, Jordi Molla makes a case for being the worst actor in Hollywood with his over-the-top scene chewing turn as the head bounty hunter, Santana. It’s idiotic made even worse by how horribly it is written. Spitting and yelling is not acting.
Meanwhile, Diesel is reduced to playing a character that just growls menacingly about what horrible things will happen next like he’s some sort of juiced up Nostradamus. I hope the paycheck was worth it, because anyone who ever goes to see Riddick should demand their money back on the spot if they run into him on the street or in a restaurant.
Riddick has no ambiance, no story, and no redeeming quality at all. It’s ridiculous and imbecilic at every turn.
Riddick is rated R for strong violence, language and some sexual content/nudity
